The Sounds of Forever Passing Current mood: melancholy Category: Life
Some
things in life seem like they will always be there, unchanging
constants. Even when they're not an important part of one's life,
it's still reassuring to know some things will always be there.
Lately I'm thinking about the permanent sounds, especially voices - but
of course those aren't around forever.
As a kid, I could hardly care about the sports dad had on, but now the sound of Ernie Harwell calling a Tigers game, or Sid Abel
working a Red Wings broadcast, bring back vivid memories of drives
through the country or the city. I stared out the window and
watched foxes run through retired farm fields, or dirty snow piles
melting on the road side. Nobody gets to hear those sounds any
more.
A few notable figures have passed away lately, each of
them taking a bit of my world with them. Talking with friends
recently, I remembered some others who lent generously to the
soundtrack of that life. Jim Henson slipped away with a number of
precious characters, and when Mel Blanc died, well, that was genocide!
So, life goes on. But this week it goes on in a world without Don LaFontaine.
[sorry, I just couldn't resist! ;-) ]
